Tomatoes (Thakkali) – 5 finely chopped
Onion (Vengayam)  – 4 finely chopped
Red Chillies – 2-3
Sambar Powder – 2 tsp
Ghee/Oil – 4-5 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp (optional)
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Coriander Leaves – 1 bunch
Salt to taste


In a kadai, heat ghee/oil and once hot add mustard seeds, red chillies and curry leaves and saute for a couple of minutes.

Now add onions and saute till it becomes translucent.  Now add tomatoes, sambar powder and saute till it becomes soft.   Now add salt and mix well.

Once the mixture reaches thokku consistency (or till the oil separates) turn off the heat and garnish with coriander leaves.

Yummy Vengayam thakkali is ready !! It goes well with chapathis as well as rice !!


This is an age-old recipe which my mother used to make regularly as this requires very basic ingredients and takes not much time.  It is very tasty as well.
