Ingredients:

Chow chow – 2 cut into small cubes

Toor Dal – 2 cups cooked and mashed

Red chillies – 3-4

Urad dal – 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

Fresh Coconut – 1 cup

Asafoetida – 1 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Curry Leaves – 1 sprig

Oil – 4-5 tbsp

Salt to taste

Method:

In a kadai heat oil and once hot add red chillies and Urad dal and saute for a few minutes. Take it off the kadai and set it aside. Once cool grind that together with fresh coconut and cumin seeds  into a fine paste.

In the same kadai, add mustard seeds, Urad dal, Asafoetida  and curry leaves and saute for a few minutes. Now add the chow chow and Turmeric powder and mix well. Saute for a few minutes and then add some water and close the lid to allow it to cook for a few minutes.

Now add the ground paste and salt and mix well. Then add the cooked dal and mix well. Let it cook for a few minutes till it comes to a boil.

Yummy Chow chow kootu is now ready! It goes well both with rice as well as chapathi.
