Cabbage – 500 gms finely chopped

Carrots – 2-3 finely chopped

Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp

Urad dal – 1 tbsp

Dry red chillies – 3-4

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

Fresh Coconut – 1 cup

Moong dal – 1/2 cup

Toor Dal – 1/2 cup

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Pepper powder – 1 tsp

Asafoetida – 1 tsp

Oil – 4-5 tbsp

Curry Leaves – 1 sprig

Salt to taste


In a kadai heat oil and once hot add red chillies and Urad dal and saute for a few minutes. Add fresh coconut and saute for a couple of more minutes. Turn off the heat and once cool blend it into a fine paste and keep it aside.

In the meantime in a separate vessel cook the Moong dal and Toor Dal till the dals are cooked well. Once cool, mash them and keep it aside.

In the same kadai, add some oil and once hot add Mustard seeds, curry leaves and Asafoetida and saute for a few minutes. Now add the chopped Cabbage and Carrots, Turmeric powder, pepper powder and Asafoetida and mix well. Add 3 cups of water and let it cook for ten minutes.

Now add the ground paste, cooked dals and salt and mix well. Let this cook for a few more minutes till all the ingredients have blended nicely..
