Rice Flour – 2 cups
Fresh grated Coconut – 1 cup
Jaggery – 1 cup
Elaichi Powder – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
In a kadai dry roast the fresh grated coconut for a couple of minutes and keep it aside.
In the same kadai add water and once it comes to a boil add the jiggery and stir continuously till it melts and comes to honey like consistency.
Now add the coconut and elaichi powder and mix well so that the jiggery syrup is coated evenly.
Once the pooranam mixture becomes thick turn off the heat and allow it to cool. Make them in to small balls and keep it aside.
In a separate kadai, add water and allow it come to a boil. Now sieve the rice flour to ensure it is smooth. Now add salt and the rice flour slowly and mix it to make it into a smooth dough.
Allow it to cool and add some oil and knead it. Make them into small balls and keep it aside.
Now grease your hands and make small cups out of the rice dough and fill them with the poornal ball that we had made earlier. Close the cup and make them into modakams.
Now place the modakams on the idli plate and steam cook them for 10-12 minutes. The outer layer should be a bit shiny and transparent.
Yummy Modakams (Poorana kozhukattai) are now ready !!
