Drumsticks – 3 cut into 3 inch pieces

Toor Dal – 2 cups

Peppercorns – 1 tbsp

Mustard Seeds – 1 tbsp

Asafoetida – 1 tsp

Urad Dal – 2 tbsp

Fresh grated coconut – 1 cup

Red Chillies – 1-2

Curry Leaves – 1 sprig

Ghee/Oil – 4-5 tbsp

Salt to taste


In a kadai heat water and add the drumsticks with salt and cook for 10-12 minutes till it is cooked.

In a separate kadai, roast peppercorns, red chillies and urad dal for couple of minutes and then grind them into a fine powder together with fresh coconut.

In a cooker cook the toor dal for 3 whistles, allow it to cool and keep it aside.

In the second kadai, heat ghee/oil and once hot add mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves and saute for a couple of minutes.

Now add the ground coconut and urad dal powder and mix well.  Now add the cooked drumsticks with the water and mix well.

Now add the cooked too dal and mix well.  Let it simmer for a few minutes.
